Tenebris, also known as Mr. D or BEN, is an ancient malicious entity and one of the main antagonists of Johnisdead. While its true origins are currently unknown, it is implied that Tenebris is responsible for most of the events that took place throughout the ARG, having founded the Moon Children and haunting the Majora's Mask Cartridge. Tenebris has been described as a parasite of sorts - an entity that uses the souls and bodies of others so that it may manifest itself.
Story
Tenebris's true origin is currently unknown. The Lunar Children believe that he was created by Luna as a sort of necessary darkness for the sake of balance. At some point - presumably within the early to mid 1900's, Tenebris founded the Moon Children. During this period, he was known as both the "Father" and "Mr. D", which stood for "Mr. Drowned". "Drowned" was a reference to Ben Hubbard, who he would later use as a conduit. Not much is known about Tenebris's actions while he led the Moon Children - it is likely that various moderators and Overseers handled most of the cult's day-to-day activities instead of himself. Based off of how others refer to him, Tenebris seems to be somewhat feared and not completely understood by them.
On April 23rd, 2002, Hank Hubbard drowned his son Ben. It is likely that Hank was tempted to do this by either Luna or Tenebris himself in the belief that it would lead to him becoming closer to his deceased wife, Diana Hubbard. Ben was ascended, and his soul was trapped within a Majora's Mask Cartridge. Tenebris, who began using him as a conduit, was trapped within the cartridge with him. At this point, Tenebris stole Ben's name and began calling himself BEN. The Majora's Mask cartridge was then taken and watched over by the Old Man, who Tenebris held some influence over. Tenebris and Ben would be trapped within the cartridge together for several years, resulting in the game "imprinting" itself on him, meaning he would later be seen speaking using terminology from Majora's Mask.
In September of 2010, the Old Man passed the cartridge off to Alex Hall. As Alex played the game, Tenebris began haunting him more and more. Alex later recorded these hauntings and uploaded them to YouTube. This allowed Tenebris to escape onto the internet, where he presumably returned to the Moon Children through their website Youshouldnthavedonethat.net. During this period of time, various different timelines seemingly began splitting and merging together, making the true order of events difficult to decipher. It is implied that Tenebris was using the bodies of various different characters as a host - such as SKM from the future in 2016. On September 19th, Kelbris rose from his grave and confronted Mat, seemingly imbuing him with Lunar Children knowledge and possibly Tenebris's will as well. This led to Mat killing off nearly all of the Moon Children.
In early 2011, SKM was visiting Florida with his brother Max. Here, Max was lured into a local park where he was killed by Patrem. At some point, Tenebris absorbed Max's soul, causing it to fuse with Ben's. Ben and Max then became known as the entity Drowned. On Undecim Nocte 2011, Drowned managed to escape Tenebris's control, hiding away in SKM's computer. Now without a conduit, Tenebris instead stole the soul of John, who had just been killed as a result of Kevin's ascension. Tenebris was willing to give John's soul back to Kevin in exchange for his original conduit, Ben. This resulted in Regiminis and Patrem tracking SKM's movements over the next several years in the hopes of recovering Drowned.
On May 25th, 2015, Tenebris manifested in front of Tyler in the form of a strange, tall figure. Tyler recorded this and gave the footage to the police. Since the police were secretly involved with the Lunar Children, they took great interest in this footage and interrogated Tyler about Tenebris. Over the next few months, Mat would secretly meet with Tenebris in private. This culminated in Mat convincing Tenebris to steal away the players' Ocarina and giving it to the Lunar Children on August 3rd. While this was beneficial for the cult, Mat was punished for speaking to Tenebris in private - a taboo act. Despite this, Mat continued his secret meetings with Tenebris.
During this time, Tenebris would occasionally speak to the players on Skype. On August 4th, Tenebris spoke with Patrem on Within Hubris. Here, he reiterated that he would return John's spirit to Kevin should he be given his original conduit, Ben. At some point in March of 2016, SKM and Drowned were finally captured by Kevin, who was planning on giving the both of them to Tenebris. The players managed to save SKM by submitting the "Garo's Mask". Unfortunately, Drowned could not be saved and was used as Tenebris's conduit once again on March 23rd. This seemingly granted Tenebris more power.
After this, for some reason, Tenebris seemingly began haunting Tyler in his own home and kept the Lunar Children at bay. This possibly resulted in the Lunar Children being unable to capture Tyler on April 23rd, resulting in the Cataclysm that wiped most of them out. On June 23rd, Tenebris seemingly used the "Song of Time" to revive Youshouldnthavedonethat.net on July 3rd, resulting in the players experiencing various cycles of the website from seemingly different timelines. During this time, Tenebris would use different host bodies for himself, once again going by the name "Mr. D".
Tenebris was seemingly attempt to bring things to an end by enacting the Ceremony of the Three Elements by utilizing the Four Giants. His plan was thwarted, however, when the players activated the Kill Switch. This possibly resulted in Tenebris losing control of several spirits, as Max was later able to make his way back to SKM. Despite this, Tenebris lived on.
Tenebris's actions beyond this point aren't exactly clear. It is possible he is the "Masked Entity" or "I" within IIIII - a malicious entity that yearns for destruction.
Personality
Tenebris is a chaotic, malicious entity that seems to exist only to cause pain and suffering for others. He is known as a trickster who often outright lies and misleads others.
