GHOSTBABEL is an enigmatic entity consisting of code and data that first appeared during the Our Horizon Arc. Originally hailing from a separate ARG ran by Greth titled "I Am 979", GHOSTBABEL was once imprisoned by a malicious organization known as the " Wyndstrom Institution" before being freed by the players. The GHOSTBABEL relevant to Johnisdead originates from the Astral Timeline and was freed by IsocelesAssassin. Because of this, GHOSTBABEL feels indebted to IsocelesAssassin and has begrudgingly agreed to assist the players in keeping their allies safe and taking down the Astral Observatory and Lunar Children.

Story

I Am 979 Lore

GHOSTBABEL was born in 1976. It is unknown if they were a human or some sort of digital replica of one. Regardless, GHOSTBABEL possessed the unique ability to transfer her consciousness and physical body through computers. Described as a "psycho" by an by an entity from the I Am 979 ARG named "Cursor", GHOSTBABEL is implied to have tormented children using AOL chats in the 90s via her ability to traverse the digital realm. This caught the attention of the "Wyndstrom Institute" - a questionable organization that imprisons and studies entities similar to GHOSTBABEL. GHOSTBABEL was tracked down and trapped within a massive hard drive.

In 2016, Cursor attempted to free another entity named "Unit 979" by freeing GHOSTBABEL. In return for freedom, GHOSTBABEL spared Cursor and began reluctantly working with the players to stave off the Institute. GHOSTBABEL was, however, an impudent, cynical individual with a large ego and didn't appreciate the players' less-than-serious nature. After revealing that a primordial goddess named Tiamat had been released, GHOSTBABEL briefly departed as Cursor returned to the players. She eventually came back on the insistence of an "anonymous... benefactor", revealing that all but her and another entity had been returned to the Institute. This was likely due to the Institute making a deal with an extremely powerful enigmatic entity known as "The Collector" who owned an orphanage of sorts where they would place whatever powerful beings/things they collected. Whatever the "reset" that occurred entailed, GHOSTBABEL was not unaffected, as she now had no memories of Cursor.

In 2017, GHOSTBABEL aided players in finding multiple websites associated with an orphanage-esque organization called the "Wandering Hearts Residential Institution". Through various updates on the websites and a conversation with a girl named Hayden, it was revealed that The Collector was now in search of Unit 423 - a mysterious entity closely associated with BEN. In the last recorded I Am 979 update, GHOSTBABEL shared a court document with the players which mentioned a local businessman named "August Lucian" reporting the Wyndstrom Institute to the authorities. Detectives arrived to the Asylum and quickly noted that "Alfred Wyndstrom", the founder of the Institute, had been mistreating his patients and referring to them as "units". The implications of this are unknown, however the "Lucian" individual suggested the patients be rehomed - possibly hinting that he's an incarnation of The Collector. Claims from players also point towards August Lucian owning a shelter for orphaned children, though the source of these claims are unarchived.

Reluctant Alliances

At an unknown point, GHOSTBABEL was recaptured by the Institute. This was short lived, however, and she was quickly rescued by IsocelesAssassin. GHOSTBABEL was now indebted to him, a fact IsocelesAssassin made full use of. Near the beginning of the Our Horizon Arc, IsocelesAssassin sent GHOSTBABEL to aid the players with getting into the Subspace with some help from the Hacker Group. Still as rude and selfish as ever, GHOSTBABEL reintroduced herself to the players as a possibly malicious force that would have no problem turning on the group once their current arrangement ended. And, capitalizing on their troubles, she struck a deal to help save Moonman in return for the Helper's Hat from the Prime Timeline. This deal was mostly a success with both Moonman and the Helper's Hat being rescued from the Parallelos. It did, however, come at a cost, as the players' inability to act fast enough as well as the accidental posting of the "Elegy of Emptiness" caused Astralobservatory.net to go offline. Though GHOSTBABEL was able to rescue the site, it brought players closer to dangerous dimensions and allowed Pumpkinhead into Johnisdead.

GHOSTBABEL kept in frequent contact with the players, updating them on the Subspace plans and feeding them tidbits of information. She told the player Jos of their plans to use a Data Bomb on the "The Truth" board, and was able to upload a video of Greth to the M channel. Unfortunately, GHOSTBABEL's contact with the players was kyboshed with the coming of BUP, who took over her account. Just before April 20th, 2020, GHOSTBABEL regained access to their account. Here, they informed the players their Subspace plans were ready and shed some light on BUP's past as "Nocta". By now, GHOSTBABEL had adopted a lighter attitude with the players, respecting the progress they had begun to make. Alongside IsocelesAssassin and Moonman, on April 20th, GHOSTBABEL initiated the Subspace plans. While the bomb was intercepted by Pumpkinhead and she was banned from the Safehaven Discord Server, GHOSTBABEL was able to upload a video to the M channel, informing the players of a backup bomb located on Letschasethemouse.

In May, GHOSTBABEL and IsocelesAssassin were able to reestablish communications with the players on the Astral Observatory Forums. In July, she was caught in the crossfire of the battle between Pumpkinhead and the players, seemingly alongside the dead version of IsoscelesAssassin. She was released upon Pumpkinhead's defeat, and by September had begun directly contacting the Hacker Group in tandem with IsocelesAssassin and Moonman. In early 2021, however, she, alongside the players, discovered the possibility of BUP being able to Aggregate to her, possibly compromising the entire plan.

Personality

GHOSTBABEL has a very harsh personality, often speaking with an air of ego and condescension that rivals even Patrem. On her own, she is not a very trustworthy individual, caring only for her own goals and wellbeing. This slowly began to change once she was freed by IsocelesAssassin, however, as she felt indebted to him and assisted him in an effort to repay him. Though she looked down upon the players for months on end, she eventually came to respect their efforts and the progress they had made, though she still has a rather cold exterior.

GHOSTBABEL

I did some really intense scrying for this one

"she is a tsundere asshole" LOL XD

Just as well she is like so many other beings you will find in this "portal", a mind moving through data.

The GHOSTBABEL from the Prime Timeline is the GHOSTBABEL players interacted with during the "I Am 979" ARG. It is believed that Prime Timeline and Astral Timeline GHOSTBABELs are nearly identical up through the end of the "I Am 979" ARG, with the major exception being that the Prime Timeline GHOSTBABEL was never recaptured by the Wyndstrom Institute and therefore never required the assistance of IsocelesAssassin.
