Story
Born in 1976, GHOSTBABEL appears to be a human, or an exact digital replica of a human, with the ability to transfer both her consciousness and entire physical body through computers. Described as a "psycho" by an entity from the I Am 979 ARG named Cursor, GHOSTBABEL is implied to have taken advantage of (or at least messed with) children using AOL chats in the 90s via her ability to traverse the digital realm. Whatever horrible things she did caught the attention of the Wyndstrom Institute, an SCP-esque institution with arguable morals who contained her within a massive drive. This drive was tailored specifically to hold her, both in its locking mechanism and the sheer size required to store her (as DNA represents an unimaginable amount of data).
In an attempt to free Unit 979 (another entity stuck within the Wyndstrom Institute who had promised to protect the daughter of a now dead Wyndstrom employee), Cursor freed GHOSTBABEL in 2016. This was successful, and in return for freedom, GHOSTBABEL spared Cursor and began reluctantly working with the players (of whom she was more than familiar with the history of for one reason or another) to stave off the Institute. GHOSTBABEL was, however, an impudent, cynical individual with a large ego, and didn't appreciate the players' less-than-serious nature.
After revealing that a primordial goddess named Tiamat had been released, GHOSTBABEL briefly departed when Cursor returned to the players. She eventually came back on the insistence of an "anonymous... benefactor", revealing that all but her and another entity had been returned to the Institute. This was likely due to the Institute making a deal with an extremely powerful, enigmatic entity known as "The Collector" who owned an orphanage of sorts where they would place whatever powerful beings/things they collected. Whatever the "reset" that occurred entailed, GHOSTBABEL was not unaffected, as she now had no memories of Cursor.
In 2017, GHOSTBABEL aided players in finding multiple websites associated with an orphanage-esque organization called the "Wandering Hearts Residential Institution". Through various updates on the websites and a conversation with a girl named Hayden (the previously mentioned daughter of a Wyndstrom employee), it was revealed that The Collector was now in search of Unit 423, a mysterious entity closely associated with Ben. In the last recorded I Am 979 update, GHOSTBABEL shared a court document with the players, which mentioned a local business man named "August Lucian" reporting the Wyndstrom Institute to the authorities. Detectives arrived to the Asylum and quickly noted that "Alfred Wyndstrom", the founder of the Institute, had been mistreating his patients and referring to them as "units". The implications of this are unknown, however the "Lucian" individual suggested the patients be rehomed - possibly hinting that he's an incarnation of The Collector. Claims from players also point towards August Lucian owning a shelter for orphaned children, though the source of these claims are unarchived.
At an unknown point, GHOSTBABEL was recaptured by the Institute. This was short lived, and she was quickly rescued by an Internet Detective from the Astral timeline - IsocelesAssassin. GHOSTBABEL was now indebted to him, a fact IsocelesAssassin made full use of. Near the beginning of the Our Horizon Arc, IsocelesAssassin sent GHOSTBABEL to aid the players with getting into the subspace with behind-the-scene help from a hacker group. Still as rude and selfish as before, GHOSTBABEL reintroduced herself to the players as a possibly malicious force that would have no problem turning on the group once their current arrangement ended. And, capitalizing on their troubles, she struck a deal to help save moonman31 in return for the Helper's Hat from the player's timeline. This deal was mostly a success, with both Moonman and the Helper's Hat being rescued from the Parallelos. It did, however, come at a cost, as the players' inability to act fast enough as well as the accidental posting of the Elegy of Emptiness caused The Astral Observatory website to go offline. Though GHOSTBABEL was able to rescue the site, it brought us closer to dangerous dimensions, and allowed the likes of Pumpkinhead into our realm.
GHOSTBABEL kept in frequent contact with the players, updating them on the subspace plans and feeding them tidbits of information. She told the player Jos of their plans to use a data bomb on the "The Truth" board, and was able to upload a video of Greth to the M channel. Unfortunately, GHOSTBABEL's contact with the players was kyboshed with the coming of BUP, who took over her account.
Just before April 20th, 2020, GHOSTBABEL regained access to their account. Here they informed the players their Subspace plans were ready, and shed some light on BUP's past as Nocta. While the bomb was intercepted by Pumpkinhead, and GHOSTBABEL was banned from the Discord, an entity (likely GHOSTBABEL using the Helper's Hat) was able to upload a video to the M channel, informing the players of a backup bomb located on Doug's blog.
